THE VILLAGE

Sacey is a small, rural but historic Normandy village very close to the Brittany border. It's situated in the Couesnon valley between the towns of Antrain and Pontorson.  It is now a very tranquil area and shows no sign of the troublesome historical past it had with the Romans, the Bretons and finally with the occupation in 1940.

It's an ideal place to stay if you enjoy walking, cycling, painting, coarse and trout fishing (licences are available at the Bar). The village is quiet and friendly and a perfect base for visiting the Normandy beaches, The Mont St Michel and a host of beautiful Normandy and Brittany towns like St Malo, Dinan, Rennes and Bayeux.

The Bar Tabac is within 30 metres of the house where you can have a drink, order your daily bread, buy an ice cream and the French papers. The beer is pretty good too! There is a lovely old church, a hotel and fishing lakes nearby. On a stroll through the village you'll meet many locals who are always ready to test your French! Make sure you visit the Lake,  the 14th century church and the chapel Notre-Dame de Pitie.

PONTORSON

Just 6km away from Sacey is the town of Pontorson which is twinned with Highworth in Wiltshire. It has most shops and services that you'll need during your stay. There are two Supermarkets (Champion and Intermarche), Pharmacies, Cafes, Boulangeries, Seafood Shops and a Bank with a cash machine. On Wednesday morning there is a traditional market selling local foods like cheese, fruit and bread, to clothing, furniture and live chickens! There are several restaurants and cafes to choose from. Our favourite is La Brazza which is at the far end of the main street opposite Highworth Square where they do great pizza and salads.

If you want a bit of sport, there is a tennis club, a badminton club, an equestrian centre, a football stadium, golf courses and you can also do sea and coarse fishing. There are lots of great countryside and coastal walks with plenty of places of interest to visit. Pontorson also has an art gallery and a cinema, and there are usually concerts, shows and other special events on throughout the year around the area. Our favourites are the village fetes. Check out www.france-for-visitors.com for more information.

FOUGÈRES

The nearest big city to Sacey is Fougères 40km away. A great mix of the modern and ancient France. If you want a bigger choice of the main French supermarkets and huge out of town stores, there are a number of retail parks that are easy to get to. If you fancy the more traditional relaxed French atmosphere, architecture, museums or a night out at the Theatre, visit the old town.

Standing proud on a hill in the centre is the 12th century Church Saint-Leonard. It looks like an imposing gothic cathedral outside, with superb interior and beautifully landscaped gardens that overlook part of the city, including the impressive walled medieval Chateau de Fougères. The narrow cobbled streets have surprises around every corner and many shops, services, cafes and restaurants where you can while away the hours. On Saturdays there is an excellent market selling lots of local produce including meat, fish, fruit and veg, cheese, wine, flowers, clothes, home goods, etc and many foods from around the world.

The old town is a bit hilly, but you can park right in the centre by the river and take a leisurely walk around the main sights, shop and go on a woodland walk which would take the best part of a day to explore! Visit the Fougères Tourist office website for more info.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

When you stay, you must visit Le Mont St Michel just 12km away. It's an unbelievable village built on a huge rock in a bay and is almost completely surrounded by the sea with shops, cafes and an Abbey. Other popular places to visit are the Normandy beaches, not only historically important but wonderful safe sandy beaches for the whole family. Also within easy driving distance is the walled costal town of St Malo, The Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day Cemeteries. You can also take guided tours of the area.

Other wartime attractions include The Memorial de la Liberté retrouvée near Cherbourg, the Museum 39-45 near Dinan, the Juno Beach Centre near Caen, and The Arromanches 360 Circular D-Day Cinema.

If you fancy going further back in history, try the Normandy Museum in Caen, the Château of William the Conqueror in Falaise, the Château du Breuil where they make Calvados, or there are many other beautiful Churches and Château within easy reach.

For the family, how about visiting The Chocolate Museum near Bayeux, Alligator Bay near Le Mont Saint Michel, the history tour at Festyland Park on the edge of Caen, The African themed Zoo de Champrépus near Villedieu, the Cobac Adventure Park at Lanhelin, the Submarine Adventure at Cherbourg, or the Villedieu les Poéles copper foundry and workshop at Villedieu. There's also plenty to do in the nearby town of Pontorson. See our Local Area page for more details.

These are just a few that we've seen, but there are many more. Far more than you can see in one holiday. For more ideas of what to do during your stay visit the Normandy or Brittany Tourism websites. Alternatively, simply relax and unwind!
